South Island Adventure
One of the great things about having good friends that live all over the country is that you have a good excuse to do some travelling. Our really good friends Tom and Arapera were getting married on her family farm in Oamaru, so it was a great reason to take a few extra days off work and make a proper holiday of it. We headed down to Christchurch (henceforth referred to as Chch) and took the morning to take in the changes to the city. WOW. The have cleaned things up a lot but you can really feel the devastation…entire city blocks just ‘blank’ waiting for new development. It was great to see that progress was being made. The Cathedral… well i’ll just let you see the picture and leave it at that shall I?!
After Chch we had a beautiful road trip up to Hanmer amidst some of the driest conditions I have ever seen (as it turns out an official drought was declared not long before we left Auckland). I had a genius idea to stop by some place called ‘Pegasus Bay Winery’, which in my jaffa ignorance I have never heard about. Another WOW moment.
After some relaxation in Hanmer, a mountain bike and a walk up a hill we headed off on the long 5 hour drive to Oamaru. It took a little bit of singing to keep Sienna asleep and its fair to say that ‘Old Mac Donald’ has a zoo rather than a farm! Oamaru was fantastic – an amazingly beautiful wedding with some stunning scenery to boot. Its a special little place which I must admit have never given much attention. But after this trip we will certainly make an effort to stop by if we are passing through.
Oh and the Hangi? Choooice 🙂
