Long Weekend in Russell // NZ Travel Photography in the Bay of Islands
You know when you are in the throws of winter, and you really just need to ‘get away’? Yeah, that was us this past weekend. Russell is a favourite spot of ours and at just over 3.5 hours drive from Auckland it still feels like a world away. It takes us a little longer to drive than that – you need to stop at Kaiwaka for Dutch ‘drop’ (salty licorice for the uninitiated). I’ve started to notice that once I get on that car ferry at Opua something ‘clicks’ in me and I instantly feel like someone has switched my holiday switch.
We stayed at a magnificent Air BnB called ‘The Bay Cottage’. Its located in Te Wahapu Bay which is one of the bays before you get to Russell township. Its so incredibly secluded. I can’t describe how quiet it is in the mornings when you stand on the deck overlooking the water. Its the perfect spot at only 10 minutes drive from Russell to base yourself. That being said, aside from a couple of trips to frequent the Duke of Marlborough for lunch and dinner, we chillaxed in what Sienna called ‘the tree house’.
Anyway, i’m not really one to write too much, so i’ll let the photos do the talking. Enjoy.
